On Tuesday, May 15, 2021, Ed Gainey, a Pennsylvania Representative, defeated Bill Peduto and was elected as the new Pittsburgh Mayor. He will officially become the mayor on January 3rd, 2022, after he takes the oath of office.
Gainey has been involved in the government and politics for quite some time. In 2012 he held a seat in the House of Representatives. He beat Bill Peduto, Pittsburgh’s mayor of 4 years, in the 2021 election.
Ed Gainey will be Pittsburgh’s first African American mayor. According to TribLive, Gainey “wants to work for everyone.” He wants to have a united city.
